Vine

Clematis / Royal Cascade

Clematis need something to climb on. Use sweet pea netting, trellis or a suitable host plant such as roses, shrubs or trees. Carefully but securely attach vine to a cane and lead into the support. Where practical, it is a good idea to plant a small shrub to shade the roots of your clematis.

To promote healthy growth, wait until the top 3 inches of your soil is dry before you water. Water thoroughly but not too frequently. Summer heat combined with overly frequent waterings or automatic irrigation can create an environment for unwanted fungi.

Clematis enjoy a well-drained soil, a neutral pH and a moderate to heavy feed.

Features:

Flowers 6 to 9 inches from June to September.

Companion Plants:

Friendly.

Care and Dead Heading:

This variety falls into the pruning group B classification. Pruning is not necessary for flowering. In early spring when the swelling of the leaf buds is apparent, a light pruning to remove weak and deadwood is beneficial. A variation in the length of each stem will help produce a well balanced plant.

Planting Instructions:

Dig an 18 inch wide by 18 inch deep hole. At the bottom of the hole, place 6 inches of well rotted manure mixed with good top soil or compost. The top of the root ball should be at least 6 inches below ground level. Backfill with good quality topsoil mixed with a handful of bone meal (if your soil has high clay content, add peat moss).
